Grant Overview
Cultural Heritage Tourism Development in American Samoa
American Samoa faces distinct economic challenges, with a significant dependence on a limited range of industries such as fishing and government employment. The territory's economic landscape reveals a high level of unemployment, particularly among its youth and women. According to the Department of Commerce, the tourism industry has been underdeveloped, with only around 26,000 visitors annually, far below its potential due to limited infrastructure and promotional efforts.
The local population, rich in cultural heritage and traditions, faces barriers in monetizing their cultural assets. Many artisans struggle to gain access to markets and often lack resources to promote their craft or heritage sites effectively. The underutilization of cultural heritage tourism not only restricts employment opportunities but also risks the erosion of local traditions and pride.
In response, the Cultural Heritage Tourism Development grant aims to bolster American Samoa’s economy by funding initiatives that promote sustainable tourism focused on local culture and traditions. This includes grants for infrastructure improvements such as visitor centers, promotional materials, and training programs for artisans on marketing their products. The initiative seeks to build capacity within the community to attract visitors while ensuring that local cultures are preserved and celebrated.
The desired outcomes of this initiative are twofold: first, to increase tourist arrivals and enhance the overall visitor experience through improved facilities; second, to empower local artisans and communities financially. By creating a sustainable cultural tourism framework, American Samoa can generate vital economic growth and job opportunities. This grant, therefore, serves as a catalyst for revitalizing the local economy, all while emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and identity. The success of this project will help establish American Samoa as a significant player in the regional tourism market, fostering both economic development and cultural pride.
