Grant Overview
Youth Environmental Stewardship Initiative
In American Samoa, environmental issues such as coastal erosion, waste management, and reliance on imported goods pose significant challenges to both the ecosystem and the sustainability of local communities. Youth unemployment rests at around 30%, and many young people are unaware of the environmental issues affecting their islands. This grant aims to empower and engage American Samoan youth through environmental stewardship initiatives that foster leadership while addressing pressing local challenges.
The target population includes young individuals aged 13-25 who reside in both urban and rural areas of American Samoa. These youth often lack access to educational resources and training that inform them about sustainable practices. Many local schools focus predominantly on traditional subjects, neglecting crucial topics such as environmental science and conservation, which are vital to the future of the islands. This gap in knowledge and opportunity underscores the importance of creating programs that directly engage young people in hands-on environmental work.
Funded by the grant, the Youth Environmental Stewardship Initiative will enable young people to participate in sustainable practices through workshops and projects focusing on coral reef restoration and waste management. The program will partner with local NGOs and schools to ensure that youth receive comprehensive training in effective conservation methods. Participants will have opportunities to lead community initiatives that directly benefit the local ecosystem while developing leadership skills and fostering a sense of responsibility.
Expected outcomes from this initiative include measurable improvements in community engagement with environmental issues, increased awareness of sustainable practices, and hands-on experience in leadership roles within environmental projects. Systemic support from NGOs and local government will be essential to amplify the impact of the initiative, thereby promoting a culture of environmental stewardship among American Samoan youth.
Through actionable training and community involvement, this grant seeks to cultivate the next generation of environmental leaders in American Samoa. Unlike other regions, the unique challenges faced by the islands require targeted initiatives that engage youth in understanding and addressing their local environmental crises.
