Grant Overview

Revitalizing the Samoan Language in American Samoa

Capacity Gaps in American Samoa

American Samoa faces considerable challenges in revitalizing its native language amid increasing prevalence of English and modern influences. The rate of Samoan language use has seen a steady decline, particularly among younger generations who often prioritize English, resulting in a cultural disconnection from traditional practices. According to local studies, while 85% of residents speak Samoan, proficiency levels are dropping among youth, indicating a dire need for effective educational interventions that prioritize the native tongue.

Infrastructure/Workforce Constraints

Very few resources are allocated for language education programs focused on the Samoan language, particularly in schools. These institutions often lack adequate materials, trained linguists, and culturally relevant curricula that engage students. This shortage contributes to a cycle of language decline, as educators may not feel equipped to teach language skills effectively. Furthermore, existing digital tools and applications that promote language learning are not tailored to the distinct Samoan context, limiting their effectiveness and accessibility.

Readiness Requirements for American Samoa

To combat this decline, the proposed Local Language Learning App project aims to develop a mobile application specifically designed to teach the Samoan language to youth in American Samoa. This initiative requires collaboration with local educators to curate content that is both engaging and culturally relevant. The readiness of educational institutions to integrate the app into their curricula will enhance its adoption and effectiveness.

The app will incorporate gamified learning techniques to increase engagement while focusing on measurable language proficiency outcomes. By ensuring that the development process includes input from the community, this initiative will bolster not only the language but also cultivate cultural pride among younger Samoans. The funding will play a critical role in supporting the infrastructure needed to effectively deliver language education through modern platforms, ensuring that the Samoan language thrives in the digital age.

Through this approach, the initiative aims to promote and revitalize the Samoan language among younger generations, merging traditional knowledge with contemporary technology to create a culturally resonant educational experience.
