Grant Overview

Revitalizing American Samoa’s Traditional Farming Techniques

In American Samoa, one of the most pressing barriers to food security is the reliance on imported goods, which accounts for approximately 90% of the food consumed in the islands. This dependency exacerbates the vulnerability of the local population to fluctuations in global food prices and supply chain disruptions. The unique geographical isolation of American Samoa, with its five main islands, complicates logistics and transportation, making it challenging for local farmers to compete effectively against imported products.

Local farmers, particularly those in urban areas like Pago Pago, are faced with increasing costs and challenges associated with modern farming methods that may not align with traditional practices. Many of them are small-scale producers who rely on subsistence farming and lack access to modern agricultural technologies and training. The aging farming population has also resulted in a knowledge gap, where younger generations are not inheriting the skills needed to sustain traditional agricultural methods and diversify the local food supply.

This program aims to preserve and promote traditional agricultural techniques by providing workforce training specifically tailored for local farmers. By focusing on culturally relevant practices, the initiative seeks to increase local food production and diversify the variety of crops available in American Samoa. This not only enhances food sovereignty but also strengthens community resilience against external shocks, providing much-needed stability in food access.

Additionally, partnerships with local schools to introduce agricultural education programs will empower younger generations and encourage interest in farming as a viable career. By fostering a connection to traditional techniques, the program aims to solidify the cultural heritage of farming while preparing the next generation to engage with sustainable practices.

Through this funding initiative, American Samoa is positioned to boost local food production significantly. The emphasis on training and education not only seeks to alleviate the immediate challenges of food imports but also lays the foundation for long-term agricultural sustainability. As the local food system strengthens, it promotes economic opportunities for farmers and contributes to the overall well-being of the community, ensuring that traditional practices are revitalized for future generations.
