Grant Overview
Establishing Community Language Ambassadors Program in American Samoa
American Samoa faces significant challenges in preserving the Samoan language within its community, particularly among the youth who often interact more with English due to educational systems and media exposure. Recent assessments reveal that only about 40% of young people in American Samoa can engage in basic Samoan conversation, leading to concerns about the future viability of the language.
The key barrier to language preservation in this region has been the erosion of linguistic skills among younger generations, driven by contemporary cultural influences that prioritize English. Many young people feel disconnected from their heritage, leading to a decrease in family conversations and cultural practices that traditionally involve the use of the Samoan language. This situation has prompted community leaders to seek initiatives that could rekindle interest in language learning and cultural ties.
In response, the Community Language Ambassadors Program aims to train local members to become advocates for the Samoan language within schools and other communal settings. This program primarily targets those who have a strong connection to the language but may lack formal teaching experience. By focusing on peer-led interactions and relatable learning experiences, participants will promote language use during family gatherings, school events, and cultural activities.
With funding, the program will establish workshops and training sessions for the ambassadors, encompassing various teaching methods that resonate with youth. The inclusion of activities that celebrate Samoan heritage will further encourage linguistic engagement among younger individuals. This initiative stands to address the current gap in language education by creating informal yet impactful opportunities for young people to learn and practice Samoan in a comfortable environment.
The anticipated outcome of the Community Language Ambassadors Program is to foster greater intergenerational dialogue that emphasizes the importance of continuing the Samoan language. By actively involving youth in cultural events and workshops, the program seeks to increase overall fluency levels, leading to a stronger, flourishing community where language and culture coexist. This initiative endeavors to strengthen the social fabric of American Samoa, ensuring that the rich tradition of the Samoan language is preserved and celebrated for future generations.
