Grant Overview
Strengthening Community-Based Fisheries Management in American Samoa
American Samoa’s economy relies heavily on its fishing industry; however, overfishing and unsustainable practices have led to significant challenges in marine resource management. Surveys indicate that 40% of local fisheries are at risk of collapse, posing serious threats to food security and the livelihoods of fishing communities. The geographical isolation of American Samoa further complicates these issues, restricting access to resources and support systems essential for sustainable fishing practices.
The primary stakeholders affected by these barriers include local fishermen, predominantly from fishing families that have historically depended on local reefs for sustenance and income. The rapid decline in fish stocks not only threatens their economic stability but also impacts the cultural heritage of communities that have engaged in fishing for generations. As unemployment rises, particularly among youth, the risk of losing traditional fishing practices becomes more pronounced.
This grant program aims to implement community-led fisheries management strategies that prioritize sustainable practices among local fishermen. By providing technical assistance, the initiative will educate fishers on improving fishery health while ensuring food security. Workshops and hands-on training sessions will focus on sustainable methods, such as identifying and protecting critical habitats, practicing catch limits, and diversifying income sources.
Importantly, this initiative fosters partnerships with local organizations to create a collaborative framework for sustainability. By engaging with community leaders and stakeholders, the program will incorporate traditional ecological knowledge into modern resource management practices. This dual approach not only enhances fishery resilience but also empowers community members to take an active role in safeguarding their marine resources for future generations. Through these efforts, American Samoa is taking a significant step toward a sustainable fishing future, addressing both the ecological and economic challenges faced by local communities.
