Grant Overview
Capacity Building for Local Fisheries in American Samoa
American Samoa's fisheries are a vital economic backbone, providing food security and livelihoods for local communities. However, due to overfishing, climate change, and resource mismanagement, the health of these fisheries has come under serious threat. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicate a stark decline in several fish populations critical to local diets and economies. As a small island territory, the sustainability of these resources directly impacts the community's way of life.
Local fishers, often operating independently or within small cooperatives, face significant challenges in implementing sustainable fishing practices due to the lack of training and access to modern fishing techniques. Moreover, with insufficient knowledge of resource management, many fishers cannot contribute to the long-term sustainability of their operations, making it increasingly difficult for them to access both local and international markets.
To address these challenges, the Capacity Building for Local Fisheries initiative aims to provide training and resources that enhance the sustainability of American Samoa's fisheries. This funding will facilitate workshops and hands-on training programs focused on improved fishing techniques and effective resource management strategies. Local experts will guide these sessions, ensuring culturally appropriate practices are emphasized while adapting to modern demands.
Additionally, the initiative plans to create a support network among local fishers, enabling cooperation on sustainability goals. Technical assistance will also help fishers employ better resource management practices and navigate potential certification processes that could lead to access to larger markets. By bolstering the capacity of local fisheries, this program will aim to secure the livelihoods of families who depend on fishing while safeguarding marine biodiversity.
With a focus on empowering local fishers and building a sustainable fishing economy, American Samoa can address immediate threats to its fisheries while cultivating a more resilient community that can adapt to environmental changes and market demands.
